"Early Mornin'" is a song by American recording artist Britney Spears, taken from her fourth full length studio album, In the Zone.

Background

"Early Mornin'" is a hip-hop song with elements of trip-hop and reggae. It was written by Spears, Penelope Magnet and Tricky Stewart, who recorded the song with her. Its producer Moby said it was "very simple and, for lack of a better word, sexy."

Spears described it as a midtempo track about hangovers and "going out and feeling bad the next day", declaring it "one of my favorite tracks on the record."

Its co-writer Penelope Magnet said, "Early Mornin was my fave. I love her adlibs on that one. It was very trippy with the two of us tripped out and vibed out like that. She gave it a really nice basement tone."

Trivia

• It was originally recorded with Spears singing in her natural lower voice with an uncensored chorus. Her A&R Steve Lunt then had her rerecord it in a higher pitched vocal due to him not allowing her to use her natural deep tone. A snippet of the original has leaked.
• The chorus is performed by rapper and co-writer Penelope Magnet, who is credited in the liner notes. Male backing vocals are performed by Kyron Leslie and Tricky Stewart.
• In Ask Anything chat with Romeo Britney revealed that she wanted to release the song as a single.

Reception

It received a generally positive response. MTV praised its "shimmering, percolating beat", while it was also noted as a "hazy ode to passing out". Billboard described it as an "after-hours jam, in which Spears details some presumed one-night stands with a dude with “dark hair” and another guy named Joe", considering it a stand-out "thanks to Spears’ commitment to capturing the vibe — the singer literally yawns, whispers and giggles throughout the track as she recounts her nights out, making it feel like an authentic snapshot of her life at the time."
