In November 2016, during an interview with Las Vegas Blog, Spears confirmed she had already begun work on her next album, stating: "I’m not sure what I want the next album to sound like. [...] I just know that I’m excited to get into the studio again and actually have already been back recording."
In 2017, Grammy-nominated producer RoccStar teased an unknown hip-hop demo track for BS10 in the studio, captioning it "La Britney Spears". It was submitted for the album but little is known of this song and its title.
At the time Executive producer Justin Tranter, who worked with Spears on her previous album Glory told Billboard that the album is 'full of bops'.
Danja, producer of songs such as "Gimme More", "Break The Ice" and "Get Naked (I Got A Plan)", was working on material and released 4 song titles via Twitter.
On February 4, 2021, Danja previewed the demo "Welcome to the Jungle" on Instagram live. As on 2020 Danja and Justin Tranter were no longer attached to the project. Everything recorded in 2016-18 was scrapped.
In December 2021, Britney possibly hinted at a music comeback in an Instagram caption, saying "New song is in the works, I'm gonna let you know what I mean." The following year she released Hold Me Closer, a collaboration with Elton John.
On May 16, 2023, following the success of Hold Me Closer, The Sun UK reported Britney is working on a ‘huge new duets album’, claiming those she would like to work with include Dua Lipa, Ariana Grande, Sam Smith, Katy Perry, Kim Petras and BTS. However, this was unconfirmed and appeared to be fake.
On June 10, 2023, producer Caleb Stone revealed on Instagram that him and Stargate have been 'making beats' for 9 months in Siberia for Britney's next album. The post was deleted immediately, but was also unconfirmed if it was true.
On July 21, 2023, Daily Mail announced that a source close to Britney revealed: "Britney has plenty more in store for her fans in the coming months" revealing that she already has 'enough new music for several albums', but won't even think about putting out another record until her book has been released. However, the article mentioned "content never heard already" which may refer to the possible release of unreleased songs from prior albums.
On August 17, 2023, Extra TV announced that Britney is working on putting together a deal with Sony for what could be an ‘epic comeback album’. The same day Page Six also reported she was working on an album, saying she has ‘an upcoming writers camp’ and ‘is getting songs from some big artists’. They added “Ideally, she would love to do a record and maybe a song for the book release”, but this was unconfirmed.
On December 29, 2023, The Sun UK claimed Britney was working on her first album in eight years with Charli XCX, and planned on celebrating her debut album’s 25th anniversary with its release. According to the same source, the album is being kept ‘top secret’, with work going on behind the scenes to gather ‘a series of killer songs to bring Britney back with a bang’. However, Spears later confirmed this to be false.
A source told Rolling Stone, Jason Evigan and Cirkut were also tapped to produce songs to present to Spears.[2]
On January 3, 2024, Britney shared an Instagram post of of the Italian Renaissance painting “Salome Bearing the Head of St. John the Baptist" with a caption that stated all the rumors about her return to music were "trash" and that she "will never return to the music industry." Britney also stated she's been writing new music for other artists for the past two years as a ghostwriter and that "she's very happy this way."[3]
On Febuary 14th, 2024, some Britney fans noticed that she had deleted her “retirement” Instagram post in which she stated that she’d never return to the music industry. Later that day on BreatheHeavy.com’s forum Exhale, an insider that had shared the news of a remix of Ariana Grande’s "yes, and?" with Mariah Carey a few days prior to its announcement by the singers alleged that Britney would be returning to the industry ”soon” and that she is working on an album, however the project is not her current priority as she’s (allegedly) focusing on her mental health. "Britney is definitely coming back". They also shared that there would be two or three features coming soon, but not necessarily for her own project. "There are already two or three feats in the pipeline."
On May 7th 2024, Charli XCX appeared on the Watch What Happens Live show and she confirmed that she was asked to write songs for Britney and she apparently wrote in Malibu with Spears’s team being present. She also stated that she saw Britney’s instagram post where she denied the whole project so she thinks Britney isn’t really involved. Britney didn’t record the song that Charli XCX wrote.
