"(I Got That) Boom Boom" is a song by American recording artist Britney Spears, taken from her fourth studio album, In the Zone. The song features additional vocals from rappers the Ying Yang Twins and was intended to be released as a single.

Background[]

The song is a collaboration with southern hip-hop duo the Ying Yang Twins, who were at the time known for singles such as “Whistle While You Twurk” and “Say I Yi Yi”. Spears requested them based on their single "Naggin'" and vocals in Lil Jon’s “Get Low”.[1]

Although recorded earlier, it was confirmed in September 2003. The group's manager said, "the song they did isn’t outside of what she does or outside of what they do. She just wanted them on the cut because she wanted that hip-hop element."[2]

It is among many of Spears' songs with a hip-hop influence, which she often mentioned wanting to incorporate in her music. This includes Get Back, Outrageous, Early Mornin’, Kiss You All Over, Perfect Lover, Boys and I’m a Slave 4 U among others. The Ying Yang Twins would later have hits such as “Wait (The Whisper Song)”, “Salt Shaker”, "Ms. New Booty", and "Shake" (feat. Pitbull).

Single Release[]

It was considered as the lead single along with "Outrageous", but Spears later decided to release "Me Against the Music". It was initially confirmed as the second single, and was heard by fans on various radio stations with "Outrageous".[3] Spears wanted it to be the second single, though later decided to release "Toxic".[4] It was then intended as the third single and was to be used to promote the comedy film “White Chicks”, where it was used in a club scene.[5]

It was confirmed as the fourth single and a video was about to be filmed, but this changed when "Outrageous" was chosen to promote the film “Catwoman”.[6] It likely would’ve been the fifth single if the album’s promotion continued.

Spears' marketing director said it was also to be promoted "on R&B and hip-hop-formatted stations" when it was to be released.[7] Spears previously charted on R&B and hip-hop charts with "I'm a Slave 4 U" and "Boys".

Remix[]

An official remix known as the Collipark Remix or Collipark Radio Mix was produced by southern hip-hop producer Mr. Collipark. It has a guitar-based instrumental which samples Trick Daddy’s single “In Da Wind” and features new vocals of the Ying Yang Twins saying “go girl”.[8]

It was first heard by fans on various radio stations in early 2004 but did not leak until several months later.[9] It was intended as an alternate radio version that would be released along with the original version. The remix was later included on the initial tracklist of the Ying Yang Twins’ album “U.S.A. (United State of Atlanta)” (2005) but wasn’t on the final release.[10]

An unreleased remix by Lil Jon was also rumored but is unconfirmed.

Music video[]

Dancer and choreographer Columbus Short described the song's initial planned video, which was to include intense choreography with "awesome special effects that will blow you away."[11]

Performances[]

It was performed on CD:UK, Top of the Pops, SBS in Korea, and another show in Seoul, Korea. It was also performed on MTV’s TRL and ABC’s “In the Zone” special with the Ying Yang Twins, and was intended to be performed on Saturday Night Live.[12] In 2020, several rehearsal videos were released.[13][14]

It was performed on The Onyx Hotel Tour with a Mardi Gras theme, with footage released from the Showtime and Rock in Rio specials. It was later on the setlist for her planned Vegas show Domination (2019), which was to have a hip-hop theme.

Reception[]

The song received favorable reviews, with Billboard saying it "still remains one of the best song introductions of the new millennium. “Boom Boom” saw Spears embrace her really cool and urban side as she drew from her Southern roots," adding, "throw in a naughty verse from Atlanta’s Ying Yang Twins, and you have a weirdly perfect ass-shaking theme song for the clubs — and one of the most unpredictable pop-rap collaborations of the era."[15]

It was also noted for its "banjos, giggling, and a gruff, vacuous groove" and "Dirty South flavor", thought to "urge her to get crunk Atlanta-style."[16][17][18] Miranda J. of XXL declared it "one of Britney's more underrated tracks, but who ever got wind of it, most likely played it back a few times."[19]
